The USS Nicholas (FFG-47) was a force for defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate for the U.S. Navy, she was marvelously equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions. The USS Nicholas was decommissioned on 10 March 2014. Named after Major Samuel Nicholas, the first officer commissioned in the United States Continental Marines, the USS Nicholas and her crew lived up to his legacy of pride in service and strength of character. Commissioned on 10 March 1984, the USS Nicholas had a displacement of approximately 4,100 long tons and stretched some 453 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine torpedoes, with other weapons, she was equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, and was the home to two SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters. This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Nicholas, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a port side image of the USS Nicholas sailing through the ocean. The reverse displays the shield and crest of the USS Nicholas, imbued with bold colorful enamel. ™ Department of the Navy. Officially Licensed by the Department of the Navy.
