The USS Thach (FFG-43) was a force for defending American interests and protecting freedom across the globe. An Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate for the US Navy, she was marvelously equipped to succeed in even the most demanding of missions. The USS Thach was decommissioned on 1 November 2013.

Named after Admiral John Smith Thach, an aviator in World War II and innovator who pioneered the Thach Weave and ‘Big Blue Blanket’ Kamikaze defense, the USS Thach and her crew lived up to his legacy of pride in service and strength of character.

Commissioned on 17 March 1983, the USS Thach had a displacement of approximately 4,100 long tons and stretched some 453 feet in length. Armed with naval guns and anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine torpedoes, with other weapons, she was equipped for surface-to-air, surface-to-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, and was the home to two SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters.

This coin is minted in bronze, finished with an antique patina, and pays tribute to the USS Thach, saluting the exceptional service of her crew. The obverse contains a port side image of the USS Thach sailing through the ocean along with the ship’s shield and crest. The reverse displays the Thach’s ship number, imbued with colorful red, white, and blue enamel.
