One of the most celebrated heroes of the Shawnee nation, Tecumseh was born in the OhioTerritory in 1768.
A gifted political and military leader, he is most well known for uniting the disparate native tribes of the Ohio RiverValley and Great Lakes region against white settlers advancing westward. Under his direction, more than a dozen tribes formed a united front in the ongoing struggle to preserve the Native American way of life.
This coin is dedicated to Tecumseh, the courageous Shawnee leader who worked to unite his Native American brethren under the common cause of freedom. The obverse features a rendering of Tecumseh. The reverse features a buffalo standing inside a dream catcher, a Native American cultural icon still in use today.
According to Native American legend, dream catchers - which are made by stretching a web of sinew strands across a small wooden hoop - are designed to capture only those spirits that give life to the tribe, leaving all others to pass through its small holes.
