USS Emory S. Land (AS-39)

When the galley goes light, the fuel is low, and the torpedoes are few, sailors of the Silent Service call upon the USS Emory S. Land (AS-39) to keep them in action. On a submarine, when deployments are long, supplies go short. The USS Emory S. Land answers the stealth sailors’ call to reload and refuel. Show your solidarity and respect for the crew that delivers the goods with this challenge coin.

A talented naval architect gives the indispensable submarine tender its name. Among other achievements, Emory S. Land had the honor to direct the development of the impressive U.S. WWII submarine fleet. During the war he first served as Chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission and Chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Construction and Repair.

Without the USS Emory S. Land, submarines would be dead in the water during long, covert missions. The ship and crew brave the world’s oceans to deliver amenities and necessities to sailors wherever they are prowling enemies and defending liberty. Whether at port or at sea, a submarine will never be without food, water, spare parts, repairs, fuel, medical and dental aid, and mail when the USS Emory S. Land works the job. The highly awarded ship has seen the ports of Italy, Portugal, Egypt, Australia, and Panama as she’s circumnavigated the globe.

In December of 2015, the Navy reassigned the Emory S. Land’s homeport to Naval Base Guam. The base on Apra Harbor serves as home to 31 commands, including those of Commander Submarine Squadron 15, Coast Guard Sector Guam, and Naval Special Warfare Unit One. At the base, the ship acts as part of the Military Sealift Command’s Special Mission Ships Program. As a player in that program, the ship retains a U.S. Navy commanding officer; all other duties are manned by civilian mariners, such as navigation, communications, engineering, and steward services.

Minted in antique bronze and highlighted by bold hand-applied enamel, this challenge coin honors the crew of the USS Emory S. Land (AS-39).The obverse features the ship slicing through the sea with the flags of the U. S. and Guam flying together above. The reverse features the ship’s seal in bold red, white, and yellow, with the words “LAND OF OPPORTUNITY” trumpeting America’s reputation as a place where dreams can come true.
