The USCGC Stratton was officially commissioned by the Coast Guard in Alameda, California, under the sponsorship of First Lady Michelle Obama, who christened the cutter on July 23, 2010.

The Stratton is named for Coast Guard Captain Dorothy C. Stratton (1899–2006), who served as director of the SPARS, the Coast Guard Women's Reserve during World War II.

In July 2015 the Stratton intercepted a semi-submersible loaded with approximately 16,000 pounds of cocaine, the largest seizure of its kind. It was able to offload more than 12,000 pounds worth an estimated $181 million before the craft sank.

Also in 2015, a joint exercise of the Stratton and the unmanned aerial vehicle ScanEagle showcased the platform’s ability to conduct seamless, concurrent aviation operations with manned aircraft to maximize the effectiveness of US Coast Guard vessels.

The USCG Stratton is ready for any maritime duty that it may be called on to perform, from guarding the safety of our water ways to the protection of our country.
