Hurricane Katrina was the most devastating natural disaster in the history of the United States, resulting in massive damages and untold human suffering.
Over the course of five days, from August 25 to August 29, 2005, the storm's sustained 160 MPH winds cut an unprecedented path of destruction through America's Gulf Coast region, affecting areas of Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.
In the wake of the monstrous storm and its aftermath, which included massive flooding in New Orleans, more than 1,000 people lost their lives and approximately one million people were displaced. Responding to the disaster with courage and compassion, members of the U.S. Military have helped to repair the lives of those most in need.
This coin is dedicated to the ongoing efforts of America's military men and women, who have skillfully led the campaign to aid the millions of Americans affected by Hurricane Katrina. The obverse features a montage that symbolizes the full scope of the U.S. Military's contribution to the disaster relief effort. The reverse bears the seals of the Five Branches of America's Armed Forces and the seal of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Minted in MerlinGold®, a proprietary brass alloy that simulates the look and feel of gold, this coin contains an antique bronze finish, accented by ebony enamel highlights on the reverse. Each coin comes packaged with a detailed header card that describes the awesome power of Hurricane Katrina and chronicles the heroic response of America's military to this disaster.
