A mainstay of Coast Guard aviation for more than two decades, the HH-60 "Jayhawk" is a twin-engine medium-range recovery helicopter. Stretching 65 feet in length and possessing a rotor diameter of 54 feet, the "Jayhawk" weighs 14,500 pounds. In addition to its use in search and recovery operations, this highly versatile aircraft is used to perform law enforcement, military readiness, and marine environmental protection missions. Powered by twin turbine engines, the "Jayhawk" is capable of reaching a top speed of 180 knots and has a range of more than 300 miles. Featuring some of the world's most advanced on board reconnaissance and navigational equipment, it is able to effectively execute a full range of complex missions. This coin pays tribute to the skilled and courageous pilots and crew who serve aboard the HH-60 "Jayhawk," one of the Coast Guard's most versatile, multi-mission aircraft. Featured on the obverse is a "Jayhawk" helicopter, hovering above the sea as the crew lowers a rescue swimmer into the water. The reverse has an open area suitable for engraving. Minted in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze, this coin is struck using special "splash" dies, which give its design exceptionally high relief. Each coin comes packaged with a header card that describes the importance of the "Jayhawk" helicopter to the success of Coast Guard operations around the world.
